I am curious about the taping off of the other wire. I don't have that particular model, but build lots of cars and they always require a ground at the tank. The fuel gauge is basicly a variable resistance to ground in most cases and if there is no ground connection how is it supposed to get continuity? In most cases the ground is hooked on to a screw of the sending unit mount. If that isn't connected won't the readings at the gauge be inaccurate/faulty? Without the ground lead you are relying on the transfer of current through the tank mount at the frame through the screws and into the sending unit....many areas for poor contact to develop.
