Yea when I was in Cali it was considered an import. I asked the bartender, "when did Cali secede from the US?" Last I checked Brewed in Texas would be a domestic beer. The Shiner 96 was one of the best brews that they have come up with and I hope they bring it back as a permanent line. I have a couple bottles of the Bavarian Black Lager left at home still. That is some dark strong beer. I like them strong, but this is stronger than Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. A bit much for me, but every once in a while I get in the mood for it.
