I just had a great experience with a particular CHP officer for the VIN assignment and BAR exam that I thought I would share.
Officer Lawrence in the Woodland Hills CHP office was great. Not only does he own a BDR and a is great guy, but he allowed me to keep my HM1053 chassis number as my VIN rather than assigning one and having to prominently mount a fugly sticker.
Also, the BAR Referee at Pierce College in Woodland Hills was simialrly accomodating. After hearing stories about some BAR stations insisting on slapping their even fuglier sticker on the firewall or fender, I was a little apprehensive. This guy said he'd mount it any where that wasn't removable - in the trunk, on the frame, etc.
Oh, and I failed the smog test
