Alot easier for a street applicaton to just use a turbo or supercharger.
If I can push 650whp out of a 2.4L (148ci) and still have a useable powerband, and be reasonably reliable, then imagine how much power could be had from a much larger V-8.
Actually don't imagine it, see it (347ci LS1-based engine w/ a T76 Turbo at "medium" boost in a ~3300lb car):
