Default Riverside International Raceway & Can-Am

" Dear old Riverside International Raceway, gone these 20 years, featured a back straight more than a mile long--half of it downhill. Super-powerful "big banger" Can-Am cars were made for Riverside. Thirty-nine entered the 1968 race, and 35 of them made the grid, so this was one of the most densely populated Can-Ams ever.

That year also saw widespread adoption of big-block engines, 7.0-liter Chevrolets and Fords in the backs of McLarens and Lolas driven by most of the stars--Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, Mark Donohue, Dan Gurney, John Surtees, Peter Revson, Mario Andretti (though trouble with the brand-new aluminum Ford would keep Andretti out of this race) "

Even Can-Am had critics:

" McLaren simply drove around and around to score his first win of the season. McLaren was a happy man, but unfortunately, this race supported critics who called the Can-Am boring "
