First off when all else fails a lead hammer has always done the trick. The lead hammers are a little kinder to the wing nut than the brass hammers. However with the metal hammers if you miss the wing nut, you will put a smile in the rim and a frown on your face.
Believe it or not, there is also a technique in hitting the wing nut with the hammer. You want to hit the ear square. This is not to hard to do on the front rims but can be difficult on the rear...
What I try and do is snap my wrist just as soon as the hammer head clears the rim so that the hammer strikes the knock off ear square. What you want to avoid doing is having the hammer come in at an angle and bend the ear in.
