I don't know why they do but rats like to chew the insulation off electrical wiring, Coax cable, heating ducts and I guess seats. They can be quite destructive when they get under your house. They can carry desease too. Keep the traps out and yes they like peanut butter. But they are crafty...some will get the peanut butter without tripping the trap. I like to wrap the trip with thin wire that is kinda stiff to hold the bait on and that usually fools the rat. Gottcha! A cople things I have learned from the rat catching experts is that their fur is oily and they will leave a trail in areas they frequent. It looks like dirty spot on the wall or floor where they enter and exit. You can see it on siding or stucco too. Best to plug the openings with steel wool or wire mesh. If your catching big rats you can count on there being little ones around too. I hate rats, good luck.
