That is a good read, Mick. No matter how you look at it.
As a kid, I used to read some of the combat comics, which weren't funny by the way, that depicted the horrors, heroes and honor of WWII. I looked over the photos my dad brought back from his tour and there were many, some of which are now lost.
He didn't serve on the front lines, but as Crew Chief on a C-47 in Alaska. He didn't see a lot of death first hand but did see his best buddy go down in their C-47. He told me, with misty eyes, that the Captain would not let him parachute to offer assistance but it turned out all were instantly lost anyway.
I can't remember all the stories he told me. I wish he were still here as I have more to talk with him about.
The story may not be true and is mentioned in
snopes. Like I said it's a good read anyway.
