I have 3.9's in my Commodore with the T56, it has a mildish cam and makes just over 300rwkW's.
When I get lazy, I just go 1st, 3rd, 5th then 6th, I do this probably 30% of the time, (I don't use the clutch either when I'm super lazy). If I want a bit more zap I just go through the gears normally. As mentioned before it cruises at around 1600rpm in 6th at 100.
I wouldn't worry about the cost to change the diff ratio in the PCM either. Any decent tuner would do that for nothing if they had tuned your car, it's a 1 minute job when they have your program on file....
Of course it's up to you, but I say keep the low ratio.... I don't think you'll regret it.
