I took the Lake Michigan ferry a few years ago and found that you do not save any time as opposed to going around Chicago especially when you allow for the time waiting for the ferry, loading and then unloading, etc. On the other hand, it was a pleasant ride and I did enjoy the break.

I don't remember the toll but I found the schedule and rates on the net.

If your primary purpose is to save time and money, then the ferry probably is not worth it. If you enjoy a boat ride and wish to avoid the Chicago traffic, then I would recommend it.
