Well I, for one, would never even think of doing such a thing. Maura, after repeatedly frying the back of my ankle, I now carry a welding blanket in the car. Mostly for my passengers, as I don't really care all that much about me (but I do use it, when I can remember to reach behind the seat and pull it out). I also put them over the pipes when I pull in somewhere (like a car show) where there is the possibility that little kids will run up and touch them before I can stop them. My ceramic pipes cool down within a few minutes, but initially they can be upwards of 400 degrees.
