As an American, I am offended by the use of these words: "celebrity-in-chief, king obama." in your post.
How many hours a month do the pilots fly for non-missions, training, certs, etc.?
It's just the cost of maintaining the fleet.
They were flat-out stupid for not announcing the photo-shoot as a public event, so that everyone could watch.
