Timing is everything. It's not that any of us don't want the average mileage on new cars to increase, its more about announcing the higher standard now when the auto industry and the economy is in the dumper, big time. It's an overload scenario - a nightmare scenario that could have waiting a year or so. Global Warming (cap and trade) is in the same nightmare bucket - more research is needed, not regulations now.

Also, drilling more holes will not solve the problem - but it would help - using all our resources would help and if that happens and more is needed - Americans would get on board, big time. In other words, going strictly left to solve known and unknown issues is not going to get the support of those in the middle or right.
