When I was signing it, I asked what the point of having the contract was if they can change it at will. They gave me some song and dance saying it was their standard paperwork.

The point is, that once they have you on contract the one thing they won't change is that whoever they place you with cannot hire you direct without paying a big finder's fee. Also, in most of those contracts you can't go direct until you've been at the job for at least 6 months or an even bigger finder's fee is required!
