As the cars vary with age (generation) and builder preference it would be best to proceed carefully. BUT...on my old car (an EM) the door panel was attached via 'pop' tops, like those that hold a kids jacket together. The base screwed into the door, and a cover gets attached to the panel that 'pops' over the base. To get them apart,
carefully get on both sides of the top, between the door panel and the door, and gently pry up until it releases. I have also seen EM's where the panel has a pushpin, which is used all over the trim on new cars. same process as above. Of larger concern is that on my EM the cable attached to the latch which was then laminated
INSIDE the door. I saw that when I built mine and decided to reinforce the door and striker area and go with oe type latches. As I didn't build EM style, I can't say for sure if you will be able to reattach the cable or not without 'massaging' the door.

Good Luck!
