Probably just as well he retired when he did. Looked like he was doing a good job chasing down that yellow Corvette coupe but then he just never came around again. A few minutes later a Studebaker lost his engine coming out of the chicane and dumped
oil on the track that caused some severe problems. While they were trying to get the Studebaker set up for the tow truck several more cars came around and hit the
oil. Most managed to hang on but the Nascar that was running did a 180 and slid along the wall for a little ways. He got sorted out and almost got rear-ended by a Porsche that just barely kept control through the
oil. Another 8 or 10 cars came through, all in various states of control after the oil, until a Sunbeam Tiger lost it completely and spun into the safety truck. Completely crushed the front and rear of the Tiger but the driver looked o.k. Upshot- Studebaker with blown engine, Nascar with wall damage to the passenger side, Sunbeam Tiger probably totaled, safety truck with a banged up left rear corner and flat tire and a lot of folks who probably needed a change of underwear after coming through it all. Biggest plus was that nobody appeared to be hurt.
