I just measured my top loader,from the mounting face to the end of the spline ,it was 5
11/32 ". the very end of the crank is one inch away from the bell housing mounting face of my 429 block.
which combined dimentions add to 6 11/32, so it sounds like your housing is too short.
My housing is 6 1/2 ", then add the thickness of the sandwich plate.
My top loader is a wide ratio 2.78 first gear.
