1. I can see no other way out of this mess other than to raise taxes and of course cut spending. The US has been running significant deficits for the past 7 or 8 years as the last surpluses were under Clinton. Since Obama has been spending like a druken sailor, cutting costs isn't likely.
2. As a non-American, I can say that in general, the rest of the world actually has a better opinion of the US since the change of administrations. I believe that the people that are most upset with Obama's foreign policies are the hard core, right wing Republicans. Personally, I think that Obama set totally unattainable expectations for himself and he is almost certain to fail in some areas. I also believe that it is too early to judge whether or not his foreign policies are good or bad. Time will tell.
He seems to be more interested in giving prime time speeches on TV rather than getting the job done, however. The international press was in love with the new President but now after about 6 months in power, we are beginning to see opinions come out that are more critical. I recently read an article that basically said that he is very good at campaigning, but now he has to stop campaigning and begin leading. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
