Sounds like some good (?) ideas here and I think some experimenting with different technics are in order.

I have a couple of nuts that have seen a lot use and abuse over the years and they can always use some extra attention.
My girlfriend has a lighter hand than I do and really knows her stuff on body buffing.

I think I'll let her have a go at my nuts with the light buffing idea.

If that doesn't get them shining like new I'll try more ideas.
