Grumbling or roaring is usually the sign of a bearing or a universal joint.

If not IRS, then I would start by looking at the outboard axle bearing. You can pull the axle then spin the bearing by hand and see if it feels rough.

A differential bearing would probably make noise at all times and it would be more prominent at higher speeds.
