The root cause was a loose fuel line Patrick. But it was kind of a domino thing. It has a BG Demon w/o a choke, so it loads up when started up cold. When I cranked it, it coughed or backfired thru the carb (never does this). Within seconds, it started dropping cylinders and I shut it down. That's when I noticed smoke rolling out he scoop. It turns out that the carbon button on the inside top of the distributor disinigrated causing the spark to run wild under the cap triggering the backfire. S*** happens quick.
