The admittedly somewhat obscure reference is to the Doric columns on the Parthenon built in the 5th century BC on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece; that to appear straight the columns are actually curved and narrow somewhat toward the top. Otherwise the columns would appear top heavy. Furniture makers often taper the legs of tables and chairs to make them appear more graceful and less heavy looking etc. etc. Now the Greeks may have invented the concept... but then again they may have simply stolen the idea from the Turks...
