Two little pictures of the reason I've been in Savannah for the past 18 months. It's nearly finished and I'll soon have time to enjoy my Unique - my friends - and possibly start another car project.

From the top of hell

clayfoushee 11-01-2004 09:14 AM

Good job Randy.........it's not even leaning. Now the FAA can put some guys in there that will give all the pilots hell.

GeorgiaSnake 11-01-2004 02:39 PM

Thanks Clay.

I hope the FAA operational folks are more qualified than the numbnuts on the construction side. If not then we have a major problem and I'll stay out of planes.

We had FAA people that didn't know which end of the nail to hit telling us how to build the tower and associated facilities. The plans had errors and omissions on just about every sheet. The project "engineer" is a newbie - his degree is in business managment - that cannot read architectural or structural plans. The site RE has never been on a construction site prior to this one.

It has been a freaking nightmare. So bad that I'm ready to leave an industry that I have been in for over thirty years.

Why should that project engineer be any different from all others..

Looks like a good vantage point to watch some weekend car events...%/..between planes??

I know the type. We were doing some commercial flooring in a hospital and the daddy's boy in charge insisted that we put all the carpet in the offices right away since we had caught up on the other parts. We said it was a bad idea and he still insisted. We should have walked but our company said go ahead as long as he realizes what happens to carpet when you install it without any of the drywall hung yet. Boy was his daddy mad when he found out what the kid was doing. The drywall guys didn't put anything to protect the floors down so you had mud and sandings in the floor. My sympathies for you snake.

tower

Just curious. How tall is the tower?

TampaFla 11-03-2004 06:42 AM

Just remember it was the FAA that gave security clearances and did the background checks on all those "student" pilots on 9/11 flights. But then, as they told me once - we don't worry that much about security, so you can leave it off our pilot/plane data system and we'll save the expense..."

There were still a few people willing to stand in line to vote; but the Republican party made sure all "registered Republicans" received absentee ballot forms back in September (don't think the Democrats did the same, but don't know). Had to stand in line behind 1 person (at the Post Office weeks ago). Only way to vote in Florida (vote early, vote absentee, vote in 5 minutes).

The tower is 183' tall and has 366 steps (which I had to climb a few times). It also has an elevator up to the 150' level.

Good job Randy, looks pretty straight! Are you planning to paint it yourself?

GeorgiaSnake 11-03-2004 04:23 PM

Chill :JEKYLHYDE

I've spent enough time going back and forth I could have painted damn near everything on the planet.

I'm the one that needs body work and painting after that boondogle.

I can't believe I had that mess and another one at Ft Campbell.

Between the two I put nearly 100,000 miles on my car and spent countless hours flying.

Me thinks they need a few more electronics in that thing. At least some VHF radios....

Randy,

Thanks for bulding it. I have witnessed your almost weekly 5 hour rides EACH way to Savannah. Now I get to install the electronics...finally! The Riviera is Soooo dull this time of year. ;) ;)

tc, total start-up pee-on nowadays...with a facsimilie of a Cobra I barely get to use ;)

ToyCollector 11-10-2004 08:23 PM

I just stood back and looked at the pic with awe, did you use Levitra or Viagra to keep it straight?

clayfoushee 11-10-2004 08:31 PM

Tampa, This may be a little old news, but no one in the intelligence community would share very highly sensitive intell. with FAA in the pre-911 days. They didn't have access to stuff that was known about those hijackers. They weren't worthy of having such sensitive info. About 14 years ago, I worked for an FAA Administrator appointed by Bush #41. We had no clue what was going on in that world. The inability of various Gov. intell departments sharing what they knew pre-911 is well-documented. FAA is not an intelligence agency and entirely dependent upon what they receive from other agencies.

Randy, it is true that the may Gov. contract oversight people (especially in highly technical areas like construction) generally don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground. If they were really experienced, they wouldn't be working for the Gov. But, thanks for persevering, and I hope you made some money.

chill 11-11-2004 06:20 AM

TC... he just kept rubbing on it... just like the Cobra.....

BMK 11-11-2004 06:30 AM

Gov't contract people..just send them the bill twice.

They will pay twice....every 120 days.
