Stolen Cobras (My insurance comp.))

For your information, my insurance company sent me a form for me to sign stating that my car will be stored in a garage at all time. Once it leaves the garage it would always be kept in my eye sight.
I called the insurance company for clarity and was told that, lately these cars have been disappearing and most are never recuperated..
Since then I have been very paranoid about leaving my garage open even during the day.
I will not state what insurance company that is....

Does anyone on this site has any stories or experience with a stolen Cobra?

Two weeks ago around 50 of these cars were exposed to the elements in Rehoboth beach in the hotel parking lot and nothing like that took place, including myself, but I have….

Thanks in advance for your input..

Dex..

Nope, I can't remember any being stolen. My ins. asked me the same. I think they know the doors don't have locks:o

I haven't heard of anything nor did my insurance company ask about accomodations. I keep it locked up however because my neighbor got his Ducati stole out of his garage in the middle of the day on a Sunday!

A couple of mounths ago i heard of a trailer that was stolen and it had a Cobra in it but i dont know if they were after just the trailer or the car or both. there are many things you can do to stop the theft of your car from happening but if some jerk wants it bad enough he will get it somehow someway........

About three months ago a CR's was stolen out of a guys "closed" garage. The Cops found igt in the middle of a street with the rear ned wiped out. The angle of impact indicated it was probably on a flat bed and fell off during the theft.

Haggerty (?) called me, (Classics by Elite Inc.) about six years ago and asked if I wouldn't install some type of anti-theft device on my turn key cars? Seems three out of four Cobras they had stolen were made by "CBE-DV". At the time I was kind of proud of that!

Those seem like some pretty subjective conditions. So if you turn your back to your car to ...let's say use the restroom...and come back to a missing car, they don't cover the loss?

My friends El Camino '65 was taken from a resturaunts parking lot when he was on his way home from a cruise night. Stopped for a bite to eat with friends and gone. Insurance payed for the loss but he really wanted the car not the money.

Lojack might be an idea.

I leave mine all the time. Sometimes at night outside of clubs, in store parking lots, etc. and have never even had my sunglasses or hat taken out of it. Never heard of one stolen here in AZ.

There was another thread on Cobra Security, but here was my suggestion of what I use: RAVELCO it's an immobilizer system (only system that's never been defeated that I am aware of and only system to pass the 3 min test established by insurance companies in Mexico city where car theft if rampant). It's hidden and you would never know its on the car, you just would never get ignition. I also use the Club on my steering wheel as a visual deterrent and to make it harder for people to just roll the car away.

I believe so.....
Scary, not sure I can keep up with that stipulation..

Personally I think that's BS and no way they can enforce it. It's a car and you can't be expected to keep in in sight 100% of the time it's not locked in a vault.

Get another insurance company, yours obviously doesn't want to insure you anymore and I'd be suspect of them from now on.

Dex -- I have never heard of an "eyesight provision." More often, a classic car policy will have an "unattended" provision (meaning you agree not to leave your car unattended after you take it out of your cozy, locked garage). Those are pretty common in classic car policies. Chances are, some folks on this forum have it in their policy and never even noticed it.

why wont you state which insurance company? If true others might be able to double check their policies.

I bet less than 1% of the members on this forum have actually taken the time to read their policy.

I'm on my second cobra and both insurance policies stated very clearly - must be kept in a locked garage - not for normal usage - car shows and cruise events (mine has a 5000 annual mileage allowance) - and not to be left unattended - such as supermarket parking lot, movie theater garage etc. In those instances loss due to theft would not be covered. The ONLY time I have left it unattended is during a cobra track event with security provided for the cars in a hotel parking lot - that is covered. Shoot - this is Miami - it could be on a boat down the Miami River headed to Haiti in an hour!!

I have two lojack systems on my car. #1 if it is moved more than ten feet without the key fob within 10 feetof the car, It notifys Lojack immediately, they call and page me with 5 minutes. #2 Lojack GPS system if they get past the first.:)

Say you are near-sighted...How does the eyesight provison work if you have bad eyesight to start with.

So enlighten us - what's the legal definition of unattended?

What if you're far-sighted and can't see your Cobra, which was parked and stolen out from right underneath you?

Patrick, I've read my policy and there is no such "unattended" provision. Graph that, baby! ;)

xlr8or 10-15-2009 04:21 PM

Quit insuring it as a classic car and you won't have the unattended provision. Insure it as a standard car with a declared value. No restrictions on driving or parking.

Sure Hagerty and those types will insure them for reasonable rates but if you can't drive it or park it anywhere whats the point. Might as well leave it in the garage and let the home owners insurance cover it as contents.
