Future classic/collectibles..which cars have the right stuff? What say you?

This thread has nothing to do with me, so I'll cut off the critics right here.

Besides, we all know that I've picked three losers with respect to potential as to future collector car status. but...there was a recent article I read this summer in a auto enthusiast magazine that discussed cars they thought had real potential of being a future collector car.

So.... I thought it would be interesting to see what CC members would pick if asked to choose a contemporary car manufactured within the last 10 years that they believed had the right stuff to be a future collector car.

Well, what would you guys pick and why?

Also I thought this thread might be fun and interesting and besides I figured I'd post this before Jamo gives me a "time out" for the other thread.

An unmolested Toyota Supra Turbo. If I had one, I'd park it for now.

This all is of course that there will be GASOLINE to run the car in the future!

I think an all original Porsche 930 turbo (1976-1987) will be very collectible soon. It still looks great, has flowing curvaceous lines, fast and when someone says "turbo" I think of that car. It is the car imo that put turbocharging on the map.

I think the Ford GT will also be collectible in the long term because it looks great, is well engineered and is made in very limited numbers.

Also the H1 Hummer because it is so crazy and smacks being green right in the face.

maserati quattroporte: I think they nailed the styling both external and internal with great power
Ford GT: Perfect mix of old style and new mechanics
Subaru WRX STI's and/or Mitsubishi Evos: IMO they are the pony cars of the younger generation
Honda NSX: The car that made Maranello Italy take notice

Collectible in the last 10 years being the concept I would have to say from a domestic standpoint:

FORD GT
2000 Cobra R

Amazing, I cannot think of any others. GM has none, Dodge none, Chrysler none, Pontiac none...

Huh?!? ZR1 is nothing? What about the R version Vipers? The only thing Pontiac recently produced in limited quantities was the Firehawk Firebird. That has some potential as a collectible, but not a strong demand for the car in general.

As others have stated, my personal vote would include the Ford GT for sure. Other "collector" cars might include the Ford Cobra Mustangs (unmolested ones). I also think the current Corvette ZR1 will have an increasing aura with time. Let's not forget the Nissan GT-R as well.

Mr Mustang,

I would add some low production unmolested Saleen Mustangs to the Cobra mix. There were some nice fox body cars made in the late eighties and early nineties. The S-351 cars during the sn-95 body style have very good potential...very low production numbers with lots of power.

The Saleen S-7 twin turbo is also a favorite of mine...for the supercar group Too bad the race car version wasn't very succesful at Le Mans.

I think Jay Leno said it best. Buy a car because you really like it and enjoy it rather than speculate it's future collectiblity.

I agree with the Saleen Mustangs. I've owned a 1990 Saleen since new. I think in 90 they only made 180 or so cars. In 90-93 those numbers went down even further if I remember correctly.

Like the 65 Shelbys, some of these cars have some weird things about them, that were done to just get them out of the shop and sell them. Many cars have certain things that others don't.

The SA 10 cars are at the top of that pyramid.

I've owned mine because I love it, but keep thinking someday they might be worth a little something. Unlike the old junk we all love, at least these things have radios, a/c, good handling, etc.

1993 Saleen Mustang SA10, Saleen R Models and General Tire Car

...and of course, one of my favorites, the Saleen S7.

Also, Porsche Club Sports, Porsche 993 RS and Turbo S.

Again I thought we were talking within 10 years old???

That puts the earlier Viper GTS coupes out of the range (which I think have potential).

Z06s were produced in numbers that will fight their overall collect ability.

ZR1 is yet to be seen. If they trump it in 2 years than it's just another Vette, it needs more time to make any call as far as standout potential.

GTR is nice, but they will have to trump that in a few years too.

I am partial to my 95 Cobra R. I think of all the SVT products, these are undervalued and will climb shortly. They are unique due to their association with IMSA back in the day with quite a few professionally raced. They will soon begin racing the Rs in the HSR series!

Mine has a unique history as the Rosie's Diner car and ran in the Car & driver One Lap of America race...

At least the Saleen S7 still qualifies and some of the '99 S351 cars.

Saleen made some low number cars like the "Extreme", Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney models with the last Mustang body style change. Now that Steve's no longer involved with "Saleen", but with his own SMS company....I'm not sure what impact this will have on the collectibility of the newer models.

You guys can pass the 10 year limit. Thats fine. I'm more interested in what cars made in contemporary times you guys think will likely attain collector status. I guess the time span could cover the 1990s to present. Thats fine.

Interesting about the Mustang R. Alot of people seem to agree on that one. Cool car for sure.

Interesting thought about the Japanese cars. You could say they are this generations muscle cars that will be relevant to todays kids as they get older just likel the cars that were meaningful to many of us as kids might fade away to a degree as we fade away. I can see that argument but then again the idea of a a classic is that its a ...classic regardless of how much time has passed.

If you are breaking the rule, the '93 Rs will be far more collectible than the '95s. The 94-98 Mustang era will likely be the MII at cruises in 20 years, if they still exist

Well, the Ford GT IS already a collectors item, & I don't think they will ever be cheap - anybody that owns one pampers it, so 95% of them will remain low milers & hangar queens.

I also think the new Challenger R'T's & SRT's will be collectors items if kept in low mileage & excellent condition. I would venture to say the Dodge Boys will not be making them in a year, so what is out there will be it, & there's not many of them out there. I think Chrysler Corp. will be OOB in a year - the indicators are there.

Rare Iron: There are three camps of Ford GT owners I have seen emerge.

1. Those that buy delivery mile cars, keep them in the wrapper and wait.
2. Those that buy them, drive fairly limited miles and pamper them.
3. Those that buy them, drive them hard and frequently and put them away wet. Point in case, a friend of mine has an '06 FGT with over 50k miles with plenty miles put on at Lime Rock, Watkins Glenn and Pocano and VIR. Many guys have put whipples on and some have put the Heffner Twin Turbo bringing the car to 1100 hp.

Attrition seems fairly high as there are definitely many guys that get in over their head with the car not realizing that its mid engined design makes it an easy car to drive aggressively forgetting it has no handling electrical handling nannies. You are on your own and the car will bite and bite hard. They are viciously fast cars and you better be ready and know what you are doing.

But I agree, they are future classics/collectible if not already.

The article I read focused on two main factors, initial desireability and limited production.

I have noticed that alot of the 60's muscle cars that are now collectible and worth many times their intial window sticker were in many cases manufactured in numbers between 50 examples for such as for example the uber valuable Copo Z28s or Yenko Camoaros, Yenko Chevelles, Hemi Cudas up to the 20,000 or so examples of GTOs, Chevelles, and everything else in between. So it seems that "desirability" even in the face of what most would consider not really limited production figures or more acturatlely fairly high production numbers can still create a "collectible".

I would also add the 1993-1994 (I think they made a few of them in 1995 too) Mazda RX-7s.

Almost any limited production Ferrari like the Enzo, F40 , F50, etc.

Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of the SN95 cars. JMHO.
