Well figured I'd hop in and get the party started...

The show was pretty weak, but still suckered me in to watching it...
I love it - to save money on building the car they put on a carb instead of fuel injection, the latter "...which is the more popular way to build these cars"... ah, right... every aluminum body replica we see has fuel injection on it right? The pawn shop guys kept representing it as a 1965 Shelby, (also stating that a well restored original Cobra could fetch well over $100,000 - understatement of the year?). There is probably a lot more to this story than what we saw. - Dan |

1. The dude that sold the bare body/chassis for only $30K was clueless.
2. There is no way that the Pawn Shop trio would pour that kind of money into a CSX build just to see it for a profit. 3. I think the whole scene at the end where the old man and the son drive the car was all Hollywood and was a completely different car. 4. I was screaming through my TV..."Screw the old man! Old Man is the best part of the whole deal. As for the "knowledge" of everyone involved in that episode it was eye opening. I realize Rick has to know a little about a lot of stuff, but it was really off on this one.
I believe the whole thing was a plant... and yes the body was turned in and a totally different car was the final drive scene. Still love the show and will probably sit through the episode another 10 times... |
The show was a laffer for anyone who was familiar with the replica world. but it was good theater.
Why that show works is baffling to me. :confused: Looked like a "product-placement" marketing deal for the builder. The charade of "discovering" the CSX stamp was a groaner. With all the prior talk on the show about not buying stolen goods, shouldn't the builder simply have checked with SA down the block to see if this roller "walked" out the back door of Shelby's place? Probably a reject KMP or one of the evals that SA bought from other suppliers in their search for alternate alloy car sources. 30k for body, frame, uprights and control arms is a price that is just about bust-out retail list price. No bargain there. The builder's estimate of $159k on the finished car is optimistic at best, unless they filmed this two years ago. :p ...then there's the pesky little problem of an MSO. If it went out the front door of SA, then it's not an issue....but then there would be no drama. Agree that the "1965" appellation was annoying and deceptive...but hey...it's reality TV. :cool: The crew at Pawn makes the Teutels look like Rhodes scholars. |
IMHO- From the episodes I have watched, The show is entertaining but far from reality.

Aluminum hood scoop? And the guy from the Shelby dealer? The voice over made it sound like they were in HIS shop but they were in the Shelby LV facility. NOTHING on TV is real. I've seen reality shows taped. They leave nothing for chance. Now if you excuse me, I'm taking my 1965 Shelby Cobra to the nearest pawn shop. **) |
Regardless. You can't judge true market value by pawn shop offers. Thats for sure.
They will pay only you 50% of the value (at best) of anything regardless of what it is. |
finished car is fiberglass, hood opening (eng install) doesn't wrap around tubing as with alum. and finished car has fiberglass scoop........Ron

I watched the repeat last night....great show. What baffles me is there's a guy in the business standing there telling the seller the stuff is worth $60k, but he goes and sells it for half of that right on the spot (Cash? $100 dollars bills, son)!

I'm not sure if you were referring to my post about them being at Shelby, but the part where they are talking about the roller, in a building with the sliced in half Cobra on the wall and chairs stuffed on the false ceiling, is 100% the Shelby Museum/Cobra WIP area of Shelby American. I've never been to Tom's but I know that Shelby building well. rodneym |
I questioned the MSO also, I imagine since Shelby shop finished they would conviently come up with a new one.

I've seen bits & pieces of this show. A TV show about some pawn brokers? The only way it ever grabbed my attention was in a way that had me scratching my head as to WHY such a subject for a TV show was ever concieved in the first place!
