Dog Bites My Sidewall
When my red healer dog was in the garage, he bit the sidewall of my rear tire. A couple of days later, I noticed the tire had gone flat. Well, when I pumped it up, sure enough, the dog had bitten through the sidewall with just one of his teeth.
What makes this tragic, is that it is a 295/50 15" BFG tire with about 3,000 miles on it. I understand that the tire has not been made for over 2 years. I know one thing for sure, I can't find a replacement. Has anyone been able to patch a pinhole in the sidewall? Years ago, wasn't there a way to vulcanize a patch, like an inner tube? Will a radial tube be ok in the tire? Otherwise, if I can't fix, I may be putting the other low mileage BFG tire up for sale. |
You cannot safely patch the sidewall of the tire.

A Radial tube will work just fine. Pull the dogs teeth.

I was afaid of that. Well, I guess I'll have three BFG's up for sale soon. Can't blame the dog, as he was protecting me from a cobra.

Ummmm, tastes just like chicken.
I'd check into a interior patch combined with a tube but check with some tire experts instead of us armchair rocket scientists. |

That's what healers do, rounding up cattle. They give them a nip on the ankle to get em moving. Your Cobra has just been rounded up. :p

That happened to police car here in Redding some time back. They were called to a domestic problem case and it was about the neighbors dog. While inside talking to the neighbor and hearing how the dog wouldn't bite anything but dog food, the dog was outside busy. When they came back out all four tires of the patrol car were flat with dog bites in the sidewall. The owner had to pay to have the car hauled back in and have four new tires put on it. Ron :LOL: |
Ron, aern't pets wonderful, mans best friend and protector. I heard that there are patches made from red healer hides that work pretty well except they tend to chew their way out through the sidewall from the inside of the tire. HMMM !
How about a new set of MT S/R radials with the flame tread for that puppy. |

I am not sure just how the law is but up here the tire dealers and people who repair them will not put a tube in any tire with a sidewall puncture. It opens them up to lawsuits if anything happens. I talked to a CHP officer about this one time and he said any sidewall puncture makes the tire illegal to use on the highway. You can patch it and use it on a ranch truck or other vehicle that is never on the highway. I have seen Jack turn away many people that wanted a tube put into a tire that had a puncture in the sidewall. Ron |

I saw the end of a show yesterday Sun. 01 \18 The show was Two Guys Garage.When I tunesd in they were patching a tire with somthing that looked like latex.Thats the only part I saw . It was apatch on the inside very large . New product I am sure .Check out thier web site maybe get your answer.

Was it on the sidewall or the flat tread part of the tire. That is legal here and Jack does that for tires that have ran over something and punched a fairly large hole in the tread area. Not sure what kind of patch it is but he has to grind the inside of the tire first to get all dirt and everything out and make a rough surface for the patch to stick to. I have seen him use patches up to around 8 inches across and several inches long. But even a small sidewall puncture here is still not legal to have patched for anything but off road use.

I will reiterate the comments rgarding a sidewall puncture...Don't do it. Radials are especially sensitive since that's where they flex.
About a dozen years ago the owner of a Suzuki GS1150 brought in his bike that his dog had chewed the front fender off. It was plastic...but still... I think there was some other damage, but the missing front fender was the most memorable. |
I wouldn't run a plug/patch/tube in anything other then a tractor. Look at it this way, the integrity of the tire has been compromised, the same tire you're going to trust your life and the life of your family with? I'd hate to spend the money too, but it would be better then having it fail trying to save a penny and it ends up costing you so much more later.

Well, my tires were manufactured in 2004. I've been waiting for BFG to start production again, but I sure don't trust the date they promise to Tire Rack. They've been promising that for over a year and just keep postponing. I'm going to keep the dog, but sell the rest of my BFG's and go with another brand of tire that's 15". I'll search the posts for what's favored. Anyone need a couple of good 255/60 15" and one 295/50 15" tire? |
