BDR passes SPF GT40 at RA...the rest of the story!
Posted in a neutral zone (NOT on the BDR forum, just good manners!) Here is the previously posted video of the "Backdraft race car passing the SPF Gulf livery GT40"

Notice after the pass, the car parked on the right side of the track that caused the yellow flag zone. The race, which was NOT one of the featured Saturday or Sunday events, but rather a "fun run" was shortened by one lap by the orginizers without notifing the drivers. Yes, the BDR "won" its class, a class consisting of "one of one" I am told. In the points events both days the winner was.....an SPF GT40! THe BDR did post great lap times and the Gulf car was driven by a novice driver. Congrats on going dang fast, but the "X passes Y" video is misleading.... Lets all play nice........... Such comparisons are always problematic, the details can have so many variables you just take such comparisons with a grain of salt anyway. Even if this had been under competition at the time, still, to many variables to really make much of it one way or the other.
U-Tube is filled with such examples, "ricer" beats Z0-6, etc. etc. Any given day, time, place, who's driving, under what circumstances, eh, makes for good press though. Gotta love bench racing! :) By the way, my initial impression of this particular comparison left me wondering if the BDR was supercharged? Not that it makes a lot of difference one way or the other, but the sound of the engine seems to indicate less than full rpm is being used. Not really "going for it" just based on the sound. Super charger delivers substantial power at lower rpm's, which is why I was wondering if that's what he was running. |

Watch the video again and look for the GTs brake lights. Just where did the BDR get the sudden power to pull up on a car that it didn't pull on the previous corners? |
Good point, and I THINK that is where I found myself thinking the sound of the motor didn't sound like he was really "going for it" at that point. Well, I could be wrong, but it just sounds like a sort of casual pass. Understanding the circumstances now, it makes sense.

Yellow flag is like the yellow on a traffic light, it means "speed up and go like hell!!!

I was at the track on Saturday. Not Sunday. There was a race for these cars both days.
The Saturday race I saw had the red Superformance GT-40 driven by Dennis Olthoff leading from the start. He was closely pursued by a Porsche 911. After a few laps the 911 was in front. Next lap, Dennis was in front and he won the race. Someone told me Dennis spun somewhere on the track and that is how he temporarily got behind the Porsche. The Backdraft Cobras were well behind all this. They looked real strong and were well driven. But Dennis was in a league of his own. I was on the exit of turn one. It looked like he could take pretty much any line he wanted through this very fast turn. All of these cars were well prepared and well driven. The Gulf colored GT40 was never a factor. Well back. It was a great day at the track. Lots of Cobras in attendance. All kinds. Factory Five, Backdraft and Superformance had displays. Perfect day in fact. I don't know what happened on Sunday. Jack |

Looks like Tony Martin is driving the specially prepared Backdraftracing.com car. He's a professional level driver and could likely beat most of us in a VW. :) I would imagine that particular BDR has the best of everything and would cost a small fortune to duplicate.

Seems to be a lot of effort here to explain how a "Cobra"/Brick could pass a far superior GT ;). I think the greater news is that the BDR Cup Cars were allowed to run at the Mitty in whatever class they did. That is the real accomplishment.
There's plenty more racing stories to come from the latest Backdraft product. For Excal, no supercharger here, just a well built SMALL BLOCK FORD. |

While Olthoff's GT40 is not from 1966 it is much closer to a 1966 MK II than a BDR Cup car is to a 1966 Cobra MK III comp car. No hard feelings, just wamt to make people understand the reality. People will choose the car that s right for them be it SPF, BDR or Street Beasts. I have said before the best car for anyone is the one they are happy with. |
