Stalling issue...

The car has been running fine and even better after increasing the idle speed just a little. By mistake I filled up the tank with 89 octane gas and I usually run 93. This is where the problem started. Not sure if the Exxon station I went to sells much 89 octane. While driving to a car show after 10 miles down the road the car wanted to sputter and try to stall out. The more I drove the worse the stalling got and was becoming a friggin problem on the highway. While driving back from the car show that evening the car did the same thing which I expected it to do. Got home and just when I hit the driveway the car stalled out and I pushed it into the garage. Used carb cleaner just in case. Car runs fine in neutral and park. But once I shift it to drive it wants to stall. Could it be the gas? Holley carb needing adjustment? I also checked for a vacuum leak using break cleaner. Nothing showed there. Any thoughts, ideas or solutions? Or would a stick of dynamite be a good solution? Thanks!

Sounds like you got a bad tank of gas. That means gunk in the tank partially clogging the filters, so you run fine at idle, but can't deliver any volume to keep running. Pull a fuel filter and see what's inside. Might have to pull the tank and clean it and the filters out.

Hope nothing got to the carb.

Did you drain the tank of all the old gas that you got? Since it wants to stall under load only now, you may have to take the carb. apart and clean the insides if that gas had some water or other gunk in it. Then again it could be a coincidence and you could be having an ignition problem. Not much help I am afraid.

Haven't drained it yet. This whole mess just started Friday night. I will be draining it this week and taking a look at the filters. It was running fine until I filled the tank up with gas. I usually use 93 octane but I hit the wrong button that belonged to the 89 octane. To much of a hassle to go thru to change. Today I was wondering just how many people buy the 89 octane from this station!! I knew I would be the lucky one. I'll get this cleared up. But what a pain in the ass! Thanks guys for your insight.

Drained the tank and replaced the fuel filter. Flushed the tank out with gas. The filter that I replaced was one that I couldn't see into. Brass in color similar size to a shot gun shell. Replaced with a Purolator filter. One that you can actually see what is being caught. When draining the tank, I did see in the bottom of the pan that there was what appeared to be rust. But after further inspection it was more on the order of dirt. It would disintergrate by touch. I am going to fill up with 93 octane and see what happens. When I put her in drive hopefully she will run. If not I'll take the carb off and inspect.

Good luck. I hope that will cure your problem. That gas could have been old or just a bad load.
