Trunk tool kit, help me
I have had my SPF for about four months now, thought it prudent to put together a tool kit to carry in the trunk (particularly worried about a flat tire). I bought a basic tool kit with pliers, screw drivers, sockets, etc., threw in the four pound lead hammer for spin off wheels, wire spinner tool and wire, and an aerosol can for tire repair. Should I buy some sort of compact jack? What else should be in my trunk?

For flats you need:
Part 1 .....A cell phone .....A AAA card Part 2 .....A can of fill flat Part 3 .....Pliers and other devices to remove nails .....A plug insertion set .....A cigarette lighter powered air compressor from Harbor Freight .....A cigarette lighter outlet All of these fit in a very small space. |
Has anyone used the spare tire inflator kit that SVT developed for the Shelby GT500??
Basically they carried this over from the Ford GT program which didn't have a spare tire. It is a compressor that will plug into the lighter and can be used as a regular compressor or you can flip a portion of it and it will dispense fix-a-flat along with the air. They packaged it in a Styrofoam housing to fit in the spare tire well but it can be removed from that can be stowed separately. If you are looking for a compact jack, I would recommned buying a Honda jack from a local auto recycler (aka junk yard). I have one for my TR6, it works great. Plan to get one for my Cobra (when it's done! :))

For flat repairs, check with any good motorcycle supplier. There are a number of good plug kits available.
I have a small 12V air compressor I bought at WallyWorld for about $12. Remove everything that doesn't look like an air compressor (all the plastic bits), and you end up with a pretty small package. As for tools, carry the basic stuff you already know about. Use that tool kit to do basic maint and small repairs in the garage. Then you'll know what tools - exactly - that you'll need for roadside repairs. Don't forget baling wire, duct tape, and some zip ties. Mallory and MSD distributers are pretty famous for breaking down; modules, caps, rotors, and shear pins. I can spares, and the tools to replace those parts all the time. A set of ignition cable ends is a good idea, too. Sometimes you burn a boot and need a replacement. |
Swiss Army Knife , zip ties , telco scissors , full size leather man tool, gaffers tape , electrical tape , jumper cables, 2x 20" 2x6 planks to get your cobra nose on a traditional flatbed tow truck. Aaa card.

For flats I carry:
6lb lead hammer ANTI-SEIZE!! (noone mentioned it in their kits). Safety wire and pliers No room for the rest of the stuff like jacks. So I carry a cell phone and AAA card. Essentially I carry what I expect the AAA guy won't have to remove the tire. The fix-a-flat kit might be useful and not take up too much space. I also carry a spare engine belt and on longer trips add the sockets etc. |
I had pretty much what the others said but I also carried a spare coil and coil wire. And a spare belt at all times as they don't take much space.

There are alot of things that most people keep in there cars, I have a nice bag , thats filled with everything from a small mag light to a first aid kit, and a assortment of basic tools, which in my case, is everything from spare relayes , fuses, road flares,I could go on and on, my bag weighs about 25 pounds, but it has all the stuff that I think I would need in an emergency, and or break down.

I got this vinyl travel bag from Finish Line accessories. It's the perfect size and holds pretty much everything that I need.

I'm playing around with adapting a collapsable jack from a Mercedes...Small, and good lift height. I'll keep you posted...

My tool kit is an abandoned tool pouch from the Harley,have all the same tools and keep it behind the seat.Except for spare master link, spark plugs everything works for both machines.

A roll-up exercise mat is good. Only weighs a pound or two and saves the knees, or back if you need to lay on it to reach under the car etc.
