NEW 9" FLAT Air Filter Base Available

For those of you that weren't following the thread, I have come up with a 9" low/flat air filter base that will fit on a 4150 Holley and clear the float adjusters. Will fit in a turkey pan too. For those of you with hood clearance challenges, this is the ticket.
Here's the thread so I just don't keep repeating things:

Let me know any feedback, suggestions and comments.

Thanks.

Any chance your source could machine in the cutouts for the float level adjusters?

Do you have a price point established yet?

Cheers from Dugly

Dugly,

I need to check the original post to find out what carb you have. Right now, I have about 10 blanks and I am cutting the notches myself for clearance of the float adjusters on a Holley 4150. I think I recall you have a different carb.

As far as price point, I'm thinking about $30/each (Club Cobra Special). That would just cover tooling and machining costs and would be in "off the spinning machine" finish, with my best attempt at deburring around the notches. I suppose I could take the time to offer them in anodized, polished etc, but for now I'm just trying to keep cost down. After all, it's the baseplate and it's hardly visible.....

I've been lurking, following this thread. I'm very interested in purchasing one of these from you. I don't need the cutouts on mine, though, with my Lemans bowl Holley.

PM sent.

Doug,

No problem. I still have some without the cutouts. I'll check your PM and reply.

Yes, I do run an Edelbrock right now and the flat plate will not fit as the Edelbrock has a bump on the passenger's side that rises above the level of the air-cleaner's flange.

However, I do foresee a smallish (600 to 650 CFM) Holley center-hung float double pumper in the future, so I might well be in the market.

The carbs I've been scoping out have front and rear metering blocks, not just a metering plate in the secondaries as do some Holleys. I'm assuming the Holley DP you used to prototype the flat plate did, too.

Cheers from Doug  !

Hi Doug,

I modeled this part for a Holley 4150 DP. Here are a few b/w pics of the part and a mock-up on an old 4150.

Let me know if you want to give one a try. $30 / ea + your desired shipping method. That's for my CC Bud's here. I have not published this on any other sites yet and you guys are my gunieu pigs (sp?)! :D

If anyone doesn't like it, or it doesn't work, I'll take it back and provide a full refund. No questions, no hassles.

I was lucky enough to get one of the first ones. This is a nice piece and I'm looking forward to trying it out. It should help with some over rich, hard braking/cornering stumbles I've experienced in a couple of cars.

9" filter base

OK Guys, here's a neat item for those who are running a Turkey Pan and wonder whether they're getting enough airflow from their Stellings and Hellings oem aircleaner.

You already know the answer - you are not getting anywhere near enough air into the ol' 427 through the S & H. There are several threads here that have looked at the flow rates - all conclude that there is not enough airflow.

So you do like I did - you start searching the 'net for a suitable replacement. The K & N X-Stream 9" filter nearly always stands out as a possible alternative - that is until you start measuring, and then you see it may not fit.

Until now. Michael has made up a new base to use with a 9" round filter and the X-Stream top assembly. Michael's base lowers the filter over an inch, and provides the needed room under the hood and scoop. In my install, I calculated a nearly 80% increase in surface area by using his base with the 9" X-Stream assembly.

K & N also makes several different 9" diameter filters, ranging from 1"-3" in height, that can be used to customize the X-Stream assembly. Use Michael's base plate, one of the various height 9" filters, and top it off with the 9" X-Stream top, and you have the best flowing filter available for use within the confines of a Turkey Pan.

Thanks, Michael, for taking the time and the initiative to solve this problem for us. The base plate you sent me was nicely made, arrived in great shape, and filled a much-needed niche in the Cobra builders' world. I now have a free-flowing aircleaner for daily driving, and I can drop the old S & H on for shows. A perfect combo!

Michael,

Do you have the ability to either powdercoat in clear or satin black?

Bernica 09-14-2010 10:56 AM

RodKnock,

I'm working on polished, powdercoat and anodized. It's all a matter of demand for this part, but I can always do what folks want, even a "one-off", which will take a little more time and add cost. That's why I started only offering it in the "mill finish" and leaving it up to the buyer. I'll take any feedback on interest. I think it's a good part. I have about a dozen or so now ready to go. I don't cut the notches until someone orders one, so I can always send one with or without notches...
