Safety wire winding device
Does anyone know who, if anyone, makes the device for spinning/winding the safety wires that hold the spinner on a knock off wheel? I've seen these things operated in vintage footage in the pits when they put the spinners on. It twists the safety wire correctly and quickly.

If you're talking about safety wire pliers everyone sells them, but get a good pair; the cheap ones are more trouble than they're worth. Eastwood sells them, Summit, etc. and you can Google directions.

Harbor freight has them for around $14.00. They are good quality ones IMO.

I agree. I got the Harbor Freight one and it was as good as the one we had on the farm 40 years ago... It's a pretty simple tool and pretty hard to screw up.

The key is also buying a good quality heavy gauge safety wire for the application's intended use. Spinners require a bit heavier gauge.

Milbar makes the safety wire pliers for Snap On. Not cheap but very nice. They should last you the rest of your life.
Some options to consider are:
Spring return is a very nice option.
Rubber (or silicon) in the jaws to hold onto the safety wire after you cut it.
Being able to switch between left and right hand rotation.
A great place to buy safety wire pliers and other aircraft tools is:
Aircraft Tool Supply Company
P.S. I get no cut on their sales, but have been a very happy customer for over 15 years.

And if you want to keep that safety wire from marking up your wheels you can slide a piece of heat shrink over the portion that wraps around the wheel spoke.

I used colored insulation stripped from a piece of wire that was close in color. My wheels were painted yellow and you couldn't tell the difference.

I don't like to think I am mentally deficient (at least, not all the time), but I had to Google the video instructions after five minutes of trying to figure out the best way to use the pliers and get them to lock properly. Definitely a must-watch.

I went to Harbor Freight and bought the $14.00 ones along with some heavy duty wire. I've been having fun all weekend. They work great.
