Trunk Mounted 3rd Brake Light

http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/pict...pictureid=5055 How’s this for a bit of extra brake light in the rear? It's a 3m backed LED strip from Pep Boys. I mounted it on the lower lip under the rubber molding. It's almost un-noticeable in the daylight until you step on the brake pedal.:)

I like it, wonder what it would look like on te plate frame instead?

Jimeg 01-24-2011 06:17 PM

I actually considered that but didn't care for the way it would look in the daylight.....

To each his own!

BUT, I thought the whole idea of a third brake light was to get it in the drivers "Face."
Actually the thought behind the 3rd brake light was to let the second, third, driver etc., know that a car "in Front" of the pack was slowing down. (Just an old Cops 2-cents.)

I had a couple of threads when I did this last summer. Over in the ERA forum, as I recall.

Patrick, very nice job !!! I see you did some fancy machining. My install of the LED strips gave me that little extra light at braking and is basically undetectable under the rubber molding in the day time. As a safety factor I would prefer a higher light but haven't decided if I want to mount anything to the body yet. If I make that decision I think I will go with this one. http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=1803

Well, like a lot of my Cobra repairs/fabs it became a "thing" with a lot of razzing and nagging along for the ride. Here are the two threads that dealt with it. The first was the long, painful thread as I blindly stumbled down the "3rd Brake Light" path. The second thread is the step-by-step instructions for the people that wrote me asking me for part numbers and how-to pics so that they could do it as well.

Thanks for those threads....Have you made any other unusual modifications?

Last summer I mostly fixed things that broke on it, like the balancer coming apart in two pieces on the front of the FE, and the clutch fork treating the clutch master cylinder to the "death by a thousand cuts" treatment, the zinc/ethanol clog, the rust/ozone attack on my MSD distributor, and something else that I can't remember off the top of my head. I did re-wire a new relay circuit that allows my pusher fans to have a redundant feed, and operate separately, from my radiator fan. I always take tons of photos and then post them either on the ERA forum, the FE forum, or the All Cobra Talk forum. Sometimes I actually drive the car too.:p
