To remove the bell housing you will need to: remove the seats, shifter handle, transmission tunnel, the horizontal close out panel in front of the transmission tunnel, and the vertical close out panel just in front of the horizontal panel, drive shaft, transmission, then the bell housing. The transmission comes up through the interior. Hope this helps. |

My brother had that happen to a fresh built 434 stroker small block chevy. The motor kicked back and stripped some teeth from the flywheel. The engine builder suggested putting a switch between the coil and ignition (I think) so that you begin turning the motor over before you send fire to the motor. Hasn't had a problem since and works as a theft device too. I'll talk with my brother and get a few more facts and repost.

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply. That seems to be the best way for me to replace that part. It's much easier than pulling out the complete engine with tranny. Is it easy to replace that ring gear ? Stephan

It has to be done at a machine shop. The ring gear has to be pressed on.

It can also be done with a oxy-acetylene torch. The ring gear is heated up with the torch and then dropped onto the flywheel. A lot of the aluminum flywheels have tabs to lock the flywheel in place. The tabs will easily break off after you remove the old ring gear. Get a welding shop to weld them back on, after you put the new ring gear on the flywheel. Any welding or fabrication shop should easily be able to remove and replace the ring gear for you.

So much for the engine balance. With repairing the existing flywheel or going to a new one there's no way to rebalance (short of an engine tear-down) All you can do is assume the new ring gear will "duplicate" the old one.
