Hi guys,
while starting my engine today, I heard a "crack" and some teeth flew away from my flywheel...now what to do ? Will I need to replace the flywheel ? Engine has run only 500mls up to now...

The first plan of action is to find out why you lost the teeth...

What engine, bellhousing, starter, and flywheel?

If you can provide answers to those questions, it will give us a little more information to go by.

If there are no reasons why these particular parts are not compatible, then it could be possible to just replace the ring gear on the flywheel.

I suspect there's an underlying cause though....

I had that happen and it turned out that one bolt was loose and allowed the starter gear to torque and it began eating some teeth. Did not happen like you describe, mine just wore out the ring gear a little at a time. I replaced the ring gear, made sure everything is tight and so far...so good.

As Brent points out...something is causing that to happen...loose, mis-alignment, something.

Good Luck.

That's good. Your starter is for 157T flywheels and the Quicktime bellhousings will not work with anything except 157T flywheels. So at least your parts appear compatible.

How old is the engine? Did you buy the complete package from Roush?

This way I wired the starter : Starter-reais goes to firewall-solenoid. From firewall-solenoid (one side goes direct to battery, other side direct to stater. Small port is connected with starter-relais )big red wire goes to starter. On Starter I looped the solenoid...

Stephan, is there any way to pull the starter cover off of the bellhousing, then have someone bump the starter with the coil wire off so that you can see if you're getting full engagement of the starter on the ring gear?

It really suck when it happens but it does. It looks like your starter/flywheel are not aligned properly or your parts are wrong or loose. Definitely you have a problem there. Personally I wouldn't try to live with that, you'll always question the reliability. If you don't replace you might cause further damage to the starter or more teeth from flywheel will fly off . Don't waste anytime and get to it. It's part of the game with these cars. Do you have an aluminum flywheel,I read that they're not really recommended, not as solid as steel. People use them to save weight at the track. Good luck and let us know what you find everybody can learn something. I built my own car and that's what I think and would do,so it's just my opinion, cheers. Michel

Yes sir,

I can get that for you.

For a pure street car, I prefer steel flywheels....but if you do track the car occasionally, I don't see anything wrong with running an aluminum one.

Brent, Motor and tranny (tko600) are installed in a Kirkham 427. Will I need to lift the whole package out of my car or is it possible to do the replacement from undercar...? Do you have any experience...? What would you prefere? Stephan

If you have a removable crossmember, then I would just drop the transmission down.
