American chassis or Vin numbers?
Hi everyone, hoping someone can help.
I have a mate who has a mate (sounds long winded) this mates mate bought a Cobra whilst holidaying in USA (Vegas) a few years ago.
It was in a car yard and I am 100% sure the guy was stooged.
The car was sold to him as a genuine Cobra, it has a glass body (so not a good start) the sales guy told him the body was replaced after an accident and fire.
He has been having trouble registering the car here in Australia as he can not "prove" its history, ie when first registered.
I have been supplied the Vin number and it does not look right to me.
I have been supplied 2 seperate numbers, first one being SP0xxxx (x being 4 digits) & 300MTP.
The second number means nothing to me, but would I be correct in guessing that SP0 could be Superformance?
Or is there somewhere I could supply the Vin number to and get a break down on the car?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

PM me all of the numbers and/or scan of the title issued and I can decode.
Bill S.
PS: SPO would be an early Superformance

SPOxxxx is still the VIN format used by Superformance for the chassis in the US.
Did he REALLY think it was an original "Cobra???"

Sadly, I think he did, he is a bike guy and only bought the Cobra as he knew what one looked like (shape of 1) and he thought it seemed cheap for a real one so bought without doing home work.
I think he paid around $100k.
I have not seen the car, and I probably never wll as it is near Sydney, and I am about 4000kls drive distance away.
A mate (through another car forum) asked me while I was at another marque car show last weekend, as he knew I was into Cobra's

How did he get approval to import the car into Australia? If anyone wished to do so today, you'd have to submit extensive documentation to verify its age as being at least built and first registered prior to 1989 (original registration forms, date-stamped service history, etc)
Paying 2 to 2.5 times the actual value for a Superformance is quite a mistake to make! Shame he didn't head over to the SAI factory in Vegas to ask the question...

Hi there Craig, I dont know the guy but he apparently really knows nothing about Cobra's, apart from guesstimate at valyes of real ones.
I really think he thought he was getting a real one very cheap.
I dont know import regs, but I think he bought it 3 -4 years ago.

Its a real shame that this has happened to a guy that wanted to enjoy what we all on this forum have enjoyed for some time now......the person that sold him that car needs to be.......well lets just say he needs a good talking to because hes taken advantage of someone that just wasnt up to speed on what our hobby is all about and has given our hobbie another black eye in the process....i hope he can make this work out in some way so he can enjoy his Cobra...
