Default Need help with Steering Column ID

A friend of mine asked me to help him ID a steering column that came out of a car he is working on. I looked at it and my guess is a vw but I really don't have a clue so I thought I would turn to knowledge vault I used when I was building my car...The guys of Club Cobra! I need help identifying the steering column or what type of column it was cut down from. There are no numbers on it anywhere that we could find. I am attaching a couple pictures.

The reason he is looking is that he wants to see if there is a self canceling turn signal that he can add, The car currently has a switch on the dash that is very difficult to get to and therefore is pretty much useless in traffic.

Thanks

Doesn't look like any VW that I had years ago. (66 Type 1)
As I remember, mine didn't have a splined shaft like that at all. It was more of straight shot down to the steering box.
My parents had a 67 Type 3 but we never had the column out of the car. So I don't know about that one.

That's not much help is it!

Whatever that housing is from, it looks like the rest of it is a custom fabrication using a quick-release hub. I don't see any easy solution. Maybe an early Spitfire switch into the housing below the release ring, with some kind of projection from the column for the cancelling.
