Are you talking about a mod motor here? When I read your question, I am thinking about Mr_Mustang's ERA FIA car when you say "stuffed into an ERA".....because it literally was...lol.

It's funny, it's actually got quite a bit of room in which to work on the engine . Plus, my footbox worries were all unfounded as the tops of the footboxes and not the bottoms were where any real modifications for clearance were made

PS: Mine is a late model 32V DOHC......Not a 60's SOHC motor......Just thought I would clarify that for the O.P.

The 427 SOHC is a about 32" wide. The modulars are 29" max.
