Default Newb with pricing question

Hi I'm new to the forum but old to sports cars. I'm looking at a Superformance Mark III from Gulfcoast Motorworks.

Here's the spec sheet as copied from Gulf Coast's website.

1965 Shelby MKIII 427 SPF 230 miles

The Superformance MKIII is the only Cobra replica built under license from Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc.

This vehicle has been built to the highest quality & performance standards with the likes of Roush, Tremec, Clay Cook, and Superformance. A show quality vehicle any collector would be proud to own.

Titled as a 1965 and built in 2010 with only 228 miles.

OVER $100,000 INVESTED


Roush options: 427IR MKIII ,Complete performance long block assembly with Roush polished aluminum cylinder heads, forged crankshaft, forged pistons, roller cam with roller rockers. Roush performance engine control system with polished Roush "8-stack" air induction system. Polished anodized Clay Cook Domes/air filters, Custom painted engine block (matched to car color) Aluminum flywheel upgrade, Clutch/pressure plate/flywheel/shift fork upgrade,Tremec TKO 600 / 5-speed.

I'd like anyone's opinion on the car, the setup and the price. I haven't dealt with a "build dealer" before and I have no idea what kind of margins they carry. I want to make a fair offer but I hate over paying for things. My intent is a weekend toy and show car.

My track car is a modified S2000. 479rwhp and no torque

First, I would bet that Roush 427 is a Windsor based block, not an FE like the original cars had. I'm not sure it matters to you, but I wanted you to think about it.

Second a SPF is a very nice car, but a glass body car.

Personally, at that price range, I would buy a Kirkham, with an FE engine.

You can PM me directly if you are interested. I am the Sales Manager for Hillbank Motorsports/Superformance...I was the one that originally sold this vehicle...I am extremely familiar with it...

The advertisement doesn't even do this car justice...this SPF literally has every bell and whistle that we offer...there are some options that for some reason they did not post in their ad for this car...

To make a long story short...there is WELL over 100K invested in this car...not to mention, the instillation was done by one of this best, Dennis Olthoff

While I think the price is high, not based upon total cost, but current market value, the OP should realize that Dennis Olthoff is one of, if not the, best install companies/shops that one can hire in this country.

The install and final delivery of the referenced car is likely near perfection.

Olthoff did the motor and trans install in my Superformance. It is bulletproof.

I agree with Rod--I've generally had good luck with the work that Olthoff has done for me.

Mrmustang provided good advice. It's an SPF with a lot of high-end options. Do some diligence to determine what's most important in a Cobra for you, which manufacturers are best for you, and the options that you want. Once you do this, if you still like the aforementioned SPF, then determine a fair price and make an offer.

Do the research, don't jump in too quickly (it's a buyer's market, particularly at that $ level) and enjoy whatever you buy.

Thanks to everyone who responded both in the thread and with PM's. I learned enough to make my decision a much more educated one. I appreciate the insight that you've provided.

I looked the car over carefully and it is beautifully done. I'll probably take it out for a road test later in the week. After that I'll decide if I'm going to make an offer, it's in there on consignment. We'll see if the seller is motivated, I understand it's part of a larger collection. I don't buy blue sky, I've been playing with cars since the early 60's.

His bio says he lives in Florida. The car is in Irvine, Ca. If he's flying out to drive it, I would say he is serious about making some kind of an offer if it lives up to his expectations.

ROUSH Performance Engines

All of the tech specs of the engine can be found here...its the 427IR...previous owner also had some custom work done by clay cook to the covers and the stack.

I'm sure it's a beautiful car....but I agree if u are going to spend that kind of money make u check out other options like kirkham, Shelby etc....I know a lot of cars with a lot of money invested in them but that doesn't mean the market should command that price.

I agree. While it may be a whale of a nice car, that kind of money is just crazy. Someone spent way too much for a Superformance. If I was going to spend that much $$$, I'd definitely narrow my choices to a Shelby or a Kirkham with a proper FE 427. I believe either would be a more desirable car, and have the potential to hold more of their value over time.

I concur also.

If this was the exact car you would be building anyway and you must have it right now, then the price differential is worth exploring. I think the engine alone is around $25K from Roush.

However, if you are just looking to enter the Cobra market it is an extremely top end SPF. Most high end SPF's are in the sub $90k range even with the price increase. If you buy it, don't even think about the immediate depreciation. Just show it off and enjoy it.

If it were me, I would let it sit for a few more months and then make them an offer in the mid $70's.

X2. Doesn't matter how much was spent to build it, does matter how much someone is willing to pay. If you don't like overpaying, look elsewhere and for that money go aluminum.

fltsfshr,

There are a few things you need to think about.

1) It is a 2010 not a 1965. It does not matter what it is registered as.

2) It is used. Sure maybe it only has 230 miles but someone got rid of it for a reason. Could have nothing to do with the quality of the car, but it is something to think about.

3) Do a search on here on CC. Rouch engines have had a more than just few issues and the service from Roush has not been, let’s say, the fastest.

For that kind of money, if it were me, I would need not only to check it out in person but also to have a qualified mechanic (not associated with the seller) to go over it. Have the mechanic go over it while you are there, watching, so the seller cannot "influence" the mechanic.

If the seller has any issues with a mechanic checking out the car or tries to control your attention while this is being done, then walk away.

It also could be, and probably is, a great car.

Just a few things to think about.

The reality is that someone wanted that exact car, finished out that exact way. It would have cost them higher no matter what to build it off another manuf. roller because the base is higher... Apples to donuts.

Jay, agreed.

This is a special build and the price reflects it. Regardless of being an SPF or a Kirkham, BDR, FFR, whatever, when that level of engine and options are built, it costs.

Remember, a good deal is just that, a good deal to YOU! My opinion does not matter 'cause I'm not stroking the check! If the car hits your hot buttons and you can buy it for a figure that works for you, that was "a good deal!"
