Sidepipe Turnouts
 
I'M in the process of changing the mufflers on my sidepipes. Should I angle the turnouts down a little? I've read 10 degrees max. Any thoughts? Better yet, any pics?

Yes, but not too much over that, as it becomes a debris thrower.

I have found if you angle it down too much you are reflecting sound back at yourself off the road. Save that for the tunnels, you don't want it all the time.

The driver's side pipe on my car is perfectly horizontal. For whatever reason, the passenger side pipe angles down very slightly. I've never measured how much but I'm sure it's less than 10 degrees. The angled down pipe is a pain in the ass everytime I pull into a dusty parking lot or I pull off the edge of the road somewhere. It blows dust everywhere. It gets my car and everyone elses car filthy. If I were you, I'd make them come out as perfectly horizontal as possible just to avoid the dust storm. I don't think you'll notice any difference in sound.

Jeff,

By the way, what mufflers are you changing from and to? Do you have the ERA stainless pipes or something else? I'm about to change out my stainless sidepipe mufflers to try and quiet mine down a bit.

Kicks up too much dust turned down......Cobras are suppose to be noisy. Mine are 4 inch Howell Racing Mufflers with 3 1/2 ID turned around. Sounds nice........

Mine are down about 10 degrees which I think shows a little respect for the guy in the lane next to you. And yes it does make a positive difference on your ears. Also, the dust argument sounds good but has no traction. Actually the 90° turnouts are more obnoxious as they blast everything the tires kick up straight at the guy next to you . Not cool IMHO.

Looks like Pete is building an FIA, so no pipes through the fender ... now the flanges, can't say as I have seen a setup like that before. Ceramic coat the whole setup black or silver ... probably look pretty good :)

The 289FIA's were highly modified - especially in Europe, there is almost no "norm" on the exhaust systems. The cars had to be street legal and registered. That had large influence on the cars.

The canisters had the red paint on from factory, the car is middle of the build thus it is not the final color. I can see ceramic coated headers and down pipes but it is just wasted money on the canisters.
The coating is applied to keep the exhaust gas as hot as possible to assure the fast travel.

Hey Jeff,

I just welded up the exhaust on the Kirkham, with about 10 degrees, maybe a tiny bitmmore, on the turn downs. I'm not sure where ypu are located in Chicago but I'm just north of Elgin, and south of Dundee, if you are interested in checking them out in person. I found a good method of measuring the amount of angle so that they are both the same on each side. I'll PM you.

Here are some pics of the turn downs. It is nothing radical but will help a bit with the sound.

Other options. Took this strolling around at Laguna Seca one afternoon. No idea of the heritage or owner, but enough info on the side of the car to get you there I bet if you are interested.

Hmm, I can't vouch for your experiences but they sure are contradictory to mine and anyone that has ever parked next to me in a dusty parking lot.

My pipes are turned down slightly. I am aware that they do blow the dust and so I am careful not to rev the rpms up while next to other cars. A few weeks ago we cruised to lunch after our local toy drive and as I am backing into my parking space, which had an accumulation of leaves on the ground, my exhaust blew them like a leaf blower all over and into the CSX next to me. Oh boy did I feel bad. If I were to do it again I would turn them straight out. I hate being "That Guy".
