"How much did you pay for that?"

I was raised to be respectful and have a bit of couth, but I've been shocked by how many strangers flat out ask me how much I paid for my cobra

Has happened at least a half dozen times in the month I've had the car and again this afternoon at the gas station. I would never imagine asking a stranger how much they paid for anything, I don't know, am I off base here or is it normal to be so, hmmmm, direct?

Silverback51 02-09-2012 05:55 PM

I don't tell them what I paid for the car, but I will tell them the approximate price to buy a new one with the same drive train and modifications.

Nedsel 02-09-2012 06:11 PM

I don't think I have been in a conversation about the AC in the past 5 years where the person talking hasn't come right out and asked, "So, what's this thing worth, anyway?" I always say since it's not for sale, I haven't checked.

If You Can Say It With a Straight Face...

The last time that happened to me I told the guy "It's a replica -- I ordered it off the internet from China. It was only a couple of hundred bucks, but it took forever to get here." Of course I said it seriously and with an absolutely straight face. The guy was not sure whether I was telling the truth or not.

Reminds me of when we traveled with our boys.....they'd ask "How much longer before we get there" and I would always say "Five more minutes". Make up an outrageously low or high price and put the stupid ball back in their court.

Kit sales for 14,500 and complete about 17k.

Tommy 02-09-2012 06:27 PM

My answer: I'll sell it to you for (insert double what I think its worth today here).

D111 02-09-2012 06:42 PM

yup, next thing that will bother you is how many times people ask you, is that a kit car , kit, kit here kitty kitty.it will almost make you delirious:LOL:

I just tell them Nope, its from South Africa then they must think what the heck is built in South Africa :)

I have been asked many times as well how much does it cost, and my standard answer is it's on par with the price of a new Corvette.

An admittedly vague answer to a somewhat nosey question, but actually a fairly accurate answer. I just checked and for 2012 the price is from $49,600 to $111,600 (Coupe to ZR1). I would suspect that the majority our cars would fall into that range, exactly where depends on many factors … let the person that asked the question figure it out ... ;)

aa909 02-09-2012 07:19 PM

good answers guys. I tend to give the answer John eluded to and have said "it depends on how you spec it out, could cost $50K or over a $100K depending on drivetrain and options". usually is enough but I still find it weird people are so shameless. It's the equivalent of someone saying "Hey nice watch, how much was it?", ah none of your business...

Answer: "Gee, I don't know. My girlfriend bought it for me, but don't tell my wife."

You need more business cards?

CoolCarl 02-09-2012 07:31 PM

I understand where you guys are coming from and not stating what you paid for it.

I usually respond with, "Less than you think most likely."

Then I ask them to guess. Then I tell them 23k.

Doesn't bother me one bit when people ask that question. It's natural to wonder the value of something. Especially when you can see the gears turning in their head wondering if they could somehow swing one.

Dennis O'Shea 02-09-2012 07:35 PM

There's an old saying "If you have to ask how much it costs" you can't afford it Quick Gas station story getting gas and this guy comes over and say's beautiful car I said thank you.He then says I'll trade you my brand new Escalade it was Black and brand new I said I don't think so he say's that Suv is worth almost 80K I said I'll keep mind.He couldn't understand why I said The Little Car is killer in the snow as I left his mouth was hanging wide open

LOL, I've given out a few already. this thing is a hit here in California. We may need to brainstorm opening up a West Coast Vintage-Motorsports. Let me know if you get motivated and I can rally my SF network for some fund raising :)

When people have the gumption to ask I have no problem telling them. The purchase price of (in the case of Shelbys) are easily researched and obtainable anyway.

Like the OP, I was not expecting the "how much" question as often as I'm getting it...and I've just been showing people at work pictures, I haven't even had it out yet!

I've taken this exact route. I tell them what I have and where they can find pricing information.

RodKnock 02-09-2012 10:48 PM

My solution is to just not drive the car. You get no questions that way.
