Default Sounds like a scam

I ran a listing for my Cobra in the Autotrader Classic site, below is the message I received today. Thoughts....

Thank you for getting back to me,can you assure me that i will not be disappointed if i buy this Vehicle as a Birthday gift for my Dad? as I'm ready to pay your asking price but not cash in person because I'm an Oceanographer and i am presently on a contract which will end in couple of months, the contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on the sea area, but I'm able to access my mail through my laptop and my only quickest payment option is PayPal,its safe fast and secure and i will be responsible for the pay pal transaction charges so you can get your expected amount.
If you don't have an account with paypal, its pretty easy to open one,Just log on to www.paypal.com and sign up.I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? as my Dad's birthday is fast approaching,am sure he will love this vehicle, his a mechanic and a handy man,so if there is anything that need to be fixed in it just let me know he will handle it.
I have a mover that will come for the pick up once payment clears in your account and he will handle the title for me.I look forward to hear from you with the information below.

Your PayPal e-Mail Address :
Full name:
Firm Price:
Zip code for pickup:

Thanks.
Maria.

Has anyone heard of recent Paypal scams?

Maria,

If you Google "Oceanographer scam" you'll get numerous hits with variations of the message you received. This is definitely a scam.

Kevin

I'm selling a motorcycle on Craig's list and I've gotten a few of these that are identical, except for different reasons why the buyer can't come to personally pay for it and pick it up. One was that he was on military assignment in Iraq, one was on holiday with his family in the UK, etc. Each one said they would send a certified check and arrange for pickup afterward. I spoke with my bank and they said even though the check is certifed, it can later bounce, long after the car/bike/etc is gone.
You can also always tell the english is pretty poor.
Matt

I remember the "certified check" scam discussed here a year or two ago. The mention of Paypal was what had me wondering.

"Maria" was my first response to the add just hours after the post went up. Scam or not, I'm not selling it as a birthday gift without meeting the potential owner, driver. It's just not that type of gift in my opinion.

Thanks for the responses, I'm writing this off as a scam!

You're welcome, Mike. Bad enough you're selling your Cobra. Getting scammed in the process would be unconscionable!

Kevin

It's a scam and I'm sure the link he may have added to your email is a phishing method to get passwords and personal information. Don't have a phone, full price, etc. either which way he will probably ask you to send money for some reason or another before he can send you payment. Steer away that's why those Nigerians are buying Porches!

scam big time it has been around in various twists of that scenario for quite a few years. I ran across it on a Boss 429 Stang, that was supposed to be in Europe. Just do the paypal thing and they take care of getting the Mustang to me. I told him I would give him cash, I was in Europe and would meet him to pay for the car, they kept modifying their situation, I played with them for a few days, then sent an email telling them how comfortable the jails were in San Diego for lying thieves. They closed their site for a while.

That is definitely a scam. I got a similar message from a "Petroleum engineer" on an oil rig in the gulf who wanted to buy some wheels I have for sale. Don't send any information. Ask them to send you an email address and you will in turn send a bill through paypal.

That is definitely a scam. I got a similar message from a "Hooker" who was tired of walking the streets of Atlanta and wanted to buy a car I was selling. She didn't use Paypal though and wanted to do a trade. You have to watch out, you never know what you're dealing with out there.

IT IS A SCAM!!!! I was selling one of my customers Cobras last year and I received the exact same letter word for word. This scammer even sent me emails from paypal that looked almost official. I contacted Paypal and they had me send over the emails and yes they were fake, which I figured. All most every time I have sold a customers Cobra online I’ve received a letter and every time they would be over seas on a boat and wanted to pay me through paypal.

That was a scam. However, the honest men in Nigeria who have located you since your last name is exactly the same as a fine gentleman who recently died there, leaving an estate of $14 million and no will or living relatives, and would you be so good as to send us some banking information so we can make sure this money gets to you, the man's logical heir, is absolutely believable. Right?
