Default Vehicle registration in Minnesota

Does anyone have any experience with title work/registration of a Cobra in Minnesota? Any advice or tips? Thanks!

If you are talking about a used, previously titled vehicle, everything I was told is that MN will use the current title/registration information to create a MN title.

If trying to title a previously untitled vehicle, the process can be as easy or as hard as your particular DMV office makes it. I just did a title on a new SPF last summer.

You will need the original, signed MSO and receipt, serial numbers and receipts for the engine/transmission, plus a completed Affadavit of Reconstruction. This paperwork can be taken to any DMV branch office. They will keep the originals and give you photocopies. Depending on the office you go to, they may or may not issue you a set of permanent plates. Be prepared to pay sales tax based on your receipt totals.

Make an appointment at the vehicle inspection station. At the inspection you will "fail" because there is no VIN. Send the failed inspection notice in to the DMV; they will issue a VIN and provide a VIN tag (you have no say in the VIN; it will be a MN assigned code) to the inspection office. Make your second inspection appointment and go in to have the inspector attach the VIN to your car. He is supposed to use a couple rivets, but you may be able to talk him out of drilling holes. You will now get a "pass" from the inspector. Turn it in to the DMV and wait for your title. The year of the vehicle will be the year of manufacture listed on the MSO; you won't get a '65.

Thanks Chucks1,

Now if I am doing title work on a pre registered vehicle from a different state, I still don't have a VIN #. It is an SPF. SO.... Will they assign a VIN for this vehicle, or will they use the 7 digit VIN from the out of state title? Also, title says it's a vehicle assembled from parts. I don't like this as I would like the title to indicate that it is a Superformance from 2004. This way I can go with the 10 year rule on the collector plates in 2014 as there were less than 500 built. Any knowledge or info on this? Will they change manufacturer info on the MN title?

I'm afraid I can't answer those questions, although from my converations with MN DMV (and these vary greatly each time you dial the phone; just depends on who you talk to), it would seem that the year of manufacture from the existing title is what MN would use, but the VIN could be another matter entirely. MN wants a certain set of characters, so if your vehicle does not meet that, they may decide to providw a new VIN.

My car is titled as a 2010 Supr, 2D Kit, plus there is a "Reconstructed" stamp that states 1965 Replica. Oh, and the highway patrol does not hesitate to pull you over if you fail to display front plates.
