Impressions of my Cobra so far.

WOW!!!

That's the first word that came to my mind when I decided to make this post reflecting on the past month with my Cobra.

I purchased the vehicle in December without ever driving it, had it brought on a trailer, and parked it in my garage for the Winter. This early Spring has been, quite frankly, the best Spring I've ever had!

I absolutely love this car! It's hands down the most enjoyable vehicle I've ever owned and I'm certain I will have it for a long, long time.

When I took it out the first time after changing the oil...I was just completely blown away. I couldn't believe how fast the car was! I couldn't believe how fantastic it sounded! I couldn't believe how great it felt to be sitting behind the wheel! I couldn't believe this was my car and I could do this as much as I wanted!!! That was a Sunday night and I had such an unbelievable time I took the next 2 days off work and did nothing but drive.

My first trip was to the gas station to fill the car up. I had 5 people walk up and compliment the car and had a real nice conversation with one of them. It's been like that every time I've stopped for gas, stopped for lunch or really made any stop of any kind. Hell, it's like that when I'm sitting at a stop light. I had no idea the car would draw this much attention. The thing is...everybody is so nice and interested in the car it's really been enjoyable.

When I first took it out it had a slight hesitation in 1st but was fine after about 2,100 RPM's, and just takes off like a rocket in 2nd gear. Man, does this thing pull hard!!! The hesitation persisted and progressively got worse. I thought it was a timing issue and it turns out that was the case, with a little twist. The car wouldn't stay in time because the hold down bolt was stripped on the distributor so it kept moving. I got that repaired and tuned the carb a bit....man, does this thing run good and strong.

I just love it! I never, ever, drove any of my other cars this much or had near the level of enjoyment I have had with this. I think about driving it every day, and certainly do every time I have the opportunity.

I've had a bunch of different cars over the years...3 Corvette's (1989, 1999, 2006), BMW M3, 2 Honda S2000's, 1968 AMC Javelin (that I got in High School and owned the past 17 years), 3000 GT VR4. There's just nothing like the Cobra. Nothing! I can't believe the amount of people that like the car. Neighbors that I've never met before are just wandering over to my house starting conversations. My wifes best friend, that really could care less about cars and has never had anything to say about any of the previous vehicles I've owned, sends me a text every nice morning to ask if I'm taking the car out can I come by and pick her up. She's never so much as sat in my S2000's or the Corvette's and hated my Javelin, but she just loves this thing! Everybody wants a ride that comes to the house, and I've been more than happy to oblige!

I hope this feeling doesn't wear off any time soon...so far this has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I can't ever see myself not owning a Cobra!

Nice to hear you love your car.

And at least for me, the feeling has not gotten any less after 4+ years of ownership.

I should add that my daily driver is a 2002 C5 Corvette. Nice car, but it's not even close to being a Cobra.

I have had mine about 5 yrs. i can still say it is the most fun I have had outdoors.

I feel the same way about the C5 I had, exact sentiments, it was nice but nowhere near a Cobra.

I can understand that. I have a 2011 Kawasaki Ninja that I bought 3 months before this Cobra. I thought I wasn't going to want to ride it anymore, but I still love riding. It's a totally different feel, but still very enjoyable.

12 years and over 34000 miles and I still love driving a Cobra.

I'll be honest, I didn't want to touch on this point because, quite frankly, I don't see what everybody is so scared of. Maybe it's just the fact that I don't drive like an idiot or that I'm a very experienced driver when it comes to high H.P. vehicles. I heard the same thing when I bought my 1st Honda S2000....watch out for the oversteer, this thing will snap around in a second! Well I had 2 over the span of 5 years and never once got into any trouble....of course I wasn't flooring the car in the rain going around turns either. Understandably things would happen much faster in the Cobra, but again, I don't drive like an idiot.

DK, I can promise that the Cobra is not like any other 4 wheeled toy you may own or may have owned. It can be the sweetest experience of your life but the minute you loose respect for the car or it's capabilities, it will try to kill you.

chomama1 04-14-2012 03:49 PM

I've had my Cobra for about a month and I can tell this sucker could kill me. I haven't had it over 70MPH and probably never will. BUT, I do like to go up to about 60MPH, like real fast, then I back off it.

You really have to drive this car, it tires me out because I have to be alert all the time. Having a wheel drift off onto a rough shoulder would really be bad karma. It's a fun car, but ya gotta respect it.

60 to 70 miles an hour should not be an issue.

Tell us more about your car.

DK, just go out and drive the crap out it, but don't go too far beyond your abilities. One thing about a cobra...no matter where you go people will always love to fawn over this little machine. You can park next to Vet, Viper or anything and the folks always want to talk about the cobra.
Enjoy the ride my friend.
Bill

DK,
Nice ride. Loose the Goodrich radials or it WILL kill you. Invest in some real tires.

Believe me, I have been driving the crap out of it! And, you're certainly right, it definitely receives a lot of attention. Way more than I expected.
