What sizes are you running Bruce?

And do you have any pictures?

15's = yuk, too much sidewall
17's = very nice
18's = exceptionally nice, great tire selection
why go with 60's tech in wheels when your replica has very little 60's tech elsewhere, it's only a copy of a 60's roadster using the latest tech at the time it was built. if the body style is close, and they all are, mission accomplished - go high tech everywhere else, it's already a forgery

I'll answer that with your own quote:

Is there anyone running 18's on their Cobra? If so, post a pic or two. I'd like to see it.

Silverback51 06-26-2012 03:31 PM

Don't have a picture, but I did see one with 20's on it.

Looked like crap in my opinion.

Same here loved the look of a Cobra since day one including the rubber. Those billboards look some kind of nice on a Cobra wish they could be bought in radial construction. Not a big fan anymore of bias with the thumping or flat spot feel.Hope someone will tell me the new billboards do not do that.

Even with 15's, Cobra's don't ride like a Lexus. I've got to assume that as the sidewall gets smaller, the ride has to get progressively worse.

20's?

Not so fast. Read here:

Effects of Upsized Wheels and Tires Tested - Tech Dept. - Car and Driver

Bigger rims are:
heavier
making more noise
slows the car down...

Car and driver sums it up: "And remember, unless you believe it is better to look good than to feel good, take our advice and stay away from extremely low-profile sidewalls and massively heavy wheels."

Agreed. I saw one with 20s on it too and it was a poor application in this case. Super thin rubber band tires with no side profile height make a fat body Cobra look whimpy IMO, unless you can get a bit more tire meat on the sidewalls and stuff the whole tire under the car and drop it down to hide it some.

Its too bad they stopped making wider tires for 16" wheels. It still gave a bit of the fat tire look and just a tad more wheel showing, but not too much. Still like 15s for the more 60s period fat tire look, and it rides smoother too. ;)

Avon is the best legal street 15" tire period................IMHO of course.

And I would agree.

Expensive, but worth the price.

I would say that's more fact than opinion.

While I would like the MTs, my car came with Cooper Cobras 295x50x15 and 265x50x15 in the front. I am happy with their performance, never drive in the rain so I would not know how they perfom. By the aggressive tread I would say they are fine and not a hard ride.
I am thinking of changing the 88-1953 Koni shocks for Bilsteins, anyone can tell me a replacement model # in Bilstein?
tks
Lou (Basque1)
PS
IMHO I think that anything but 15" wheels is not applicable to Cobras, just a bit of a purist.
