Finally got my Billboards on

After a week long battle with a siezed spinner and a stuck wheel  I finally got my Billboards on.

This is my first mod to the car and had it planned before I even got it. I bought this car on the same day Carroll Shelby passed away, literally about 4 hours before I heard the news.

The first picture is a before picture so you can see how much better the car looks with the Billboards. It's a night and day difference IMO. :)

Great looking cobra. Love the stripes!

Thanks! They grew on me.
I wanted an all black Cobra when I was searching, but got a really good deal on this one.
I planned to paint over them, but when the Cobra got here, they quickly grew on me!

The car and tires look awesome.

What brand was on it before ?
Let us know the drive & ride difference between the radial vs billboard bias.

They were BFG's. I'm thinking they were the originals from 1999. I'm waiting on new safety wire to arrive in the mail before I can drive the car. I'll give you my impressions then!

Sounds great. (you could just use duct tape) :p

Looks great. But then that's a given.

Have you thought about lowering it?

ERA Chas 06-18-2012 07:46 AM

Good start. Now lower it 2".

It's sitting kinda high in those pics because it was on jack stands for a week. I think it'll come down a little after I drive it (waiting for my safety wire). How do you lower these things?

Silverback51 06-18-2012 09:45 AM

It has coil over shocks. You just take pressure off of the coil by elongating it. If you tighten the spring it will raise it more.

You will need to have it realigned after you lower it. And if you can it would not hurt to have it corner weighed.

Go for a drive. The safety wire isn't going to prevent a wheel from coming off, it's just going to let you know if the spinner has moved. :)

You've come a long way, baby.

Nice transformation w/the Billboards.
Please send me a PM if you're interested in getting rid of the take-offs. I'm in the market for a set of 15" tires and live in Scottsdale (Rio Verde).

Thanks,
Will

Nice looking tires but I wouldn't have them again!

I know there have been some posts on this, but what was your experience with them?

Got to agree with Doug- I nearly lost a left rear, safety wire did nothing! It jumped off the pins, then re-seated on the ends of the pins! I had previously painted the wheels, so they were freshley re-seated (obviously not properly)

+1 .... Safety wire is for inspection purposes only. Visual aid to let you know the position of the nut. Safety wire on most everything else actually keeps the bolts from backing out from harmonics. Doesn't do anything if the bolts get enough force to shear them off. We safety wire everything on ship inside the engines due to vibrations.

ViperGuy 06-20-2012 05:22 PM

The safety wire can keep the spinner from turning IMO.
I agree that if there is a hub or pin failure the wire would do nothing though. After working on these things for the last week, I have made the decision to NOT drive the car without the safety wires installed.

I waited 39 years for this car, I can wait another day or two. :)

( Lippy) Very hard to get balanced right, flatspot when cold and they dart if the road is uneven. You better hold the wheel with both hands on a non perfect road. They also sandblast the sides of your car. But they look great.

Thanks. I guess it's Avons for me.
