"Wrapping" your Cobra
Clearly, "wrapping" a car is not as good as a great paint job; however, some of the benefits are cost, radical designs and/or the ability to change out if you don't like the color scheme. (I'm considering it as an option).
Has anyone done it and/or your thoughts. Jeff E. |
I know a few people have done it to their Corvettes on that forum.
Not for me. |
Just as long as you don't advertise your real estate sales team.

Snake scales maybe?

I did the Wrap!!
I have done it! I went through a lot of thought, testing and finally did it. It looked pretty good, not as good as a Jeff Miller paint job, but for an easy change, it worked fine. I wanted to go the 'murdered out look" so my concept was completely......Stealth! :)
1 Very difficult for a Cobra and only one company agreed to do it. 2 Still can roll up on a few edges but overall, not too much. 3 I started with Matt Black car with Satin Stripes but had so much issue with the Matt keeping its consistent look, I switched to Satin Black car with Dark Black stripes, which I liked better anyway. 4. Cleaning was pretty simple.....wash with warm water sponge or Fiber mitt, and dry off with multifiber towel. For spots just use rubbing alcohol and microfiber cloth and all gone! Easy care for sure! 5. Be sure NOT to get any chemical of substance on the Vinyl as it can cause spots not removeable. NO wax of any kind! It lasts for a pretty long time, supposedly, but what happened caused me to switch back to what I really wanted in the very building stages of my car... 3 foot Deep Black from Miller Customs. Basically, I dinged the car in traffic and though not serious, I had to either get the paint back or paint and the wrap as well. I chose the Paint path and i am in wait for the finished car soon. I had many viewers who liked the look and who couldn't tell it was wrapped. Keep in mind one thing.......It does look cool and for awhile it is flawless. But I noticed in time it began to show peeling back in different areas and this is one of the problems with Cobras. That is why most companies would not touch it, and they are very popular Wrapping Companys. Just a lot of turns, movement and it is a 'unibody' , not a paneled body where they can wrap in pieces easily. Sheets come in certain widths and that doesn't change. Made the wrap an issue, for sure. Anyway, for those interested, there you go. I made this long and detailed to keep many questions answered. |
There are guys in Houston are doing chrome wraps. Saw one on a Mustang and it looked like a polished Kirkham. Who know how long it would stay that way.
Rumor has it an esteemed colleague of ours here on this very board is contemplating a wrap based "in part I assume" on a discussion we had not too long ago about a famous racing livery from yester-years. I shan't wager whether or not how might rear his head in this thread.........:LOL::LOL: |
Thankfully it ain't me.

Wrapped Cobra in Tx
I was really impressed by the quality and cost when I saw this one at the annual Tx Cobra Club Spring Meet.

Here are a few pictures of a 289 Kirkham with a satin grey wrap with chrome stripes:

In addition to the stylistic opportunities, there are also abrasion resistant qualities to wraps. Aluminum and especially fiberglass are very susceptible to stone abrasion. I have whole body clear wrap over paint on one of my aluminum bodied cars and not even the smallest chips even in the wheel arches after 3 years and 3000 miles with sticky tires.

Could you show us some photos of the worst spots? Like colse up,s of the edges. and give costs as compaired to paint.
|
I assume you are speaking to me. I cannot, as it is now off to be redone and completely removing the 'wrap' and getting new paint. I will look thru my past photos and if I can find some, I will post them here for review.
 |
The most difficult part of the paint is doing the underlying bodywork.
Doesn't that have to be done to similar standards for either paint or wrap? |
Underbody paint to be wrapped needs to be free of issues. If it OEM then they somewhat promise no issues upon removal. If not good quality underneath, then they state peeling may occur. Any impediments showing on current car will be highlited on the wrap, meaing that if a rough portion exists on fender it will NOT be covered and hidden on a wrap.
hope that helps fred |
I had a vasectomy 28 years ago. No longer need to wrap the snake. :D

Wrap
I like what John Hall said.
|
I think it might be a good alternative to a repaint, but a fresh car not so much
