An Original One From The 60's?

I never thought I would start one of these threads. My friend says there is an original Cobra that shows up to the local car shows in the Barrington area of Illinois. I told him yea, right.

He has a $hitty cell phone, I will try to get more pics or go see the car myself.

The story goes that a gentlemen named Carl Schiffmayer bought the car brand new. He passed away a couple of years ago, but his wife still takes it to the shows with somebody else as the driver,

Guys this maybe believable. Here is one pic. I know, it’s not the best. My friend says the car looks 50 years old, and thought the CSX number was in the 3,000 series. Comments?

It's a good start but I think you'll need more to determine authenticity. Looks like a CSX

Here was a sign on a Cobra at the local show:

"Please do not touch! This car is aluminum and will bend!. This is a REAL 1965 Shelby CSX4165 (I think that was the number)"

Even the people that own them don't know what is "real" anymore...LOL

Schiffmayer's car, purchased new, was CSX3209

Note what looks like the windshield sprayer in its correct location. Hmmm...

A quick google search for CSX3209 found this:

1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster One-Owner, CSX3209 for sale by Mecum Auction

In the photos of this 3209's engine, where are the orange valve cover vent lines running to?

Probably bungs on the headers but that's not wise.

Really?

I'm confused. Are we talking about 4165, 3209 or both?

4165? Where did that come from?

Oh, I just saw the reference to 4165 in the earlier post.

I thought it looked like a road draft tube, too. I think that was the precursor to PCV valves for you youngsters.

ERA Chas 07-01-2012 08:22 PM

Road draft tubes ran out of a boss at the rear of the intake and to the ground next to the bellhousing.

rpatton3 07-02-2012 10:25 AM

Yes, the did, especially on FE engines. I got one off an earlier FE engine to put on my 427 W code GT-E when I was in high school.

These orange hoses may be a temporary solution to bypass using a PCV without the correct parts for rear of FE intake. The opening back there looked like it was a at least a couple of inches and had a removable cover on 1968 and never model manifolds.

Maybe the dress up kit for engine did not include it.

I didn't mean a proper one - looks like a Bubba road draft tube. Valve cover probably isn't baffled and it pumps oil out of that thing in addition to fumes.

Yes, if you pour oil out under your car your burn-outs look cooler.

Al G 07-02-2012 12:15 PM

The photo in the original post doesn't look like it has the orange hoses.

Al, I linked that photo from bwcobra15's post (#6 in this thread) of the Mecum auction. Here: 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster One-Owner, CSX3209 for sale by Mecum Auction

Probably goes to check valve and whisle tube into header collector to suck vacume in crankcase----done a lot on some race/hiper cars

bulletbrown 07-03-2012 03:47 PM

If I remember , Carl had three Cobras and raced them at Road America , Two 427 cars and one 289 car and a boat load of spare parts engines, trans ect. He showed the cars at Barrington once or twice a year . He was a wealth of knowledge about Cobras but he was not fond of replicas .
