If you want to answer yes to is it a Shelby, then buy a Shelby. If you want to say yes to is it a Shelby engine, then put a Shelby engine in it. If you want to drive a Shelby Cobra, buy a Shelby Cobra. If you dont care....well then....

See Marc?-since you're not shopping for assholes, look past the 'personalities' and prejudices and absorb the bits of information.
But you gotta supply some of your needs and wishes to get more than generalities. If you're staying away while you research, great-just tell us.

With these parameters, I'm thinking if I was in your shoes I'd opt to purchase 2nd hand.

This will allow you to buy in without risking the bank yet have you driving the soonest possible way. It will also allow you to go through the process of tinkering and tweaking to your liking.

If my budget was $30K, I'd consider:

1) If I was going for originality A Contemporary CCX, similar to this one posted in classifieds, just so you get the idea. This particular one is over budget, and most CCX may be, but I'm all for getting as much as possible for as little as possible.

2) If I was looking for something to race or track I'd look at, a JBL similar to this one on Cobra Country:

3) Other options that sit in the middle of the two posted above and that are sound options for that sort of money include:
BDR. - PhotoPost Classifieds - BDR Cobra with only 4000 miles - Washington State - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds
Factory five racing (FFR) - These can be had in MkII, MkIII & MKIV (MKIV's are currently being produced by FFR)
Unique - PhotoPost Classifieds - 1966 -SHELBY 427 SC Cobra - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds

There are obviously others, and as you can see you'll get many people happily trying to spend your $30K

Just telling you where I'd start if I were in your shoes and it were my hard earned.


On a side note if I had 40K This would be a done deal!!!!

$30K to spend? Unless you are a good & resourseful mechanic/builder. I would strongly suggest that you buy the best used AC on the market you can find for the 30K you have. Then refit the roadster to your liking as funds allow. IMHO, the min. cash required to build a quality AC is 40K. Saying you are a good builder, painter, mechanic, etc. All that being said, the only kit for you as a builder would be FFR MKIV. For the cash you have. It's the best value & quality (kit=20K complete) for 30K hands down. As to top 5?
1. KMC
2. CSX
3. ERA
4. ALL
5. THE REST

I want to thank everyone for there advise and I mean "All" the advise.I guess I have until Spring to get educated with hopes that the thrill won't wear off.I really don't think it will.see I've owned some kind of muscle car all my life always having to settle,because what I've always really wanted was a Cobra! But couldn't afford it and probably can't now.So now I need to be more specific.What I'm looking for is a weekend driver used for around 25-30k well built non donor.I know I'm not going to get a rip snorting 427 for that amount of money,but something with maybe 375-400 hp.My thrill comes from acceleration 0-60.I hope this helps. I thank you all once again.

I'm no expert on FFR's but I think they made a non donor FFR replica that did not utilze Mustang II suspension. I would choose FFR in your price range based on my viewing of the market. Midstates is another choice but I think they may be more and I think they use donor susupension. As to the FFRs:

They are a proven product.
Reputable company and support.
Very popular and affordable resale.

None of the FFR's, donor built or non-donor, ever used the "Mustang II" suspension components.. A donor build, would incorporate the use of some 87- up Mustang 5.0 suspension parts, in conjunction with FFR supplied tubular front upper control arms, ball joints, and custom rear spring perches, etc..

With a non donor build, they sky's the limit as to what you use. Your $$ control that aspect..

Marc, they are out there....here's a photo of mine, I bought it already constructed for $18.2K, drove it home and got 25 mpg on the highway with it, and it is my daily driver in clear weather. I did not want a garage queen, a trailer queen, I wanted to enjoy my investment on a daily basis and I do. It is incredibly fast from 0-60...everyone who rides in it is amazed at how it hooks up and just goes, no tire smoke, no drama, just incredible acceleration.

Keep looking....I have put less than $500 into mine since I bought it and $200 of that was to replace a front tire that blew out. I will soon invest another $1000 for an interior upgrade....but, then, that's the way these things are, always something to do, never completed. What is important is just as you described above, get one with a well-built chassis, make sure you have a safe vehicle, then put whatever money you want into it to make it into your dream....oh, yeah, and then drive it like you stole it!

On the street....at last year's "Cool Autumn Nights" car show in Beaumont, TX....not "displayed", but it did get more than its fair share of attention, anyway:


They are out there....and, I must admit, it seems there are more and more of them, and the prices are getting lower, too....I almost wish I had waited, as I really wanted a 289 model rather than my 427 model, but my opportunity occured and I was ready to jump in with both feet. No regrets!!!

Good luck in your search....get ready to "kiss a few frogs" before you find your "prince(ss)", but with enough effort you'll get exactly what you have described!

Sub $30k cars are out there, and you will eventually find one that is not too bad. Horsepower-wise, you won't have any problems at all -- it's the bazillion other things with these cars that you just need to learn about, see, touch, feel, and decide whether or not they are important to you. Once you do that, you may find that you would prefer not to have a Cobra at all rather than have the ones that you can actually find that are in that price range.
