Best New Radar Detector?

Hey Guys,
I'm looking to purchase a new radar detector as the one I have now has been outdated with all the new radar devices used by law enforcement. I searched the forum here on CC, and the last thread on detectors was in '07.

My research so far has me leaning toward the Valentine V-1, Escort 9500ixl, or the Bell Magum STI. Any suggestions or experience with any of these?

Thanks,
TL

I firmly believe in the Valentine 1! Just my opinion.

I have the Escort 9500ix and it does a super job. Not that I would ever need it.

If you're a CDL holder, or if you go through Canada, Australia, Virginia, DC or military bases you might want to have a unit that can avoid the Stalker Spectre Elite -- unless you don't mind getting a ticket. I would recommend the Escort Redline, which is essentially the same as the Magnum STI, but with some minor performance enhancements.

Valentine ONE. It paid for itself the first year I had it (multiple hits from long distance, and hilly roads too!)

I love my Valentine. I've had Escort/Passport in the past, and was happy with them, too. But the directional arrows and superior range tilt it in favor of the Valentine, for me.

Patrick as long as the detector is in my Cobra and not my Peterbilt it matters not. I don't run a detector in the truck because I don't speed!

I think RDs actually help you stay alert while on the road, whether you choose to speed or not.

BTW, Valentine stuff is old, old technology.

That makes it perfect for a cobra, no?

No chance of using these here... the government makes too much money fining speeding vehicles... so they are outlawed.
There's pretty much a zero tolerance in the state of Victoria. ie: caught doing 63kph in a 60zone & boom your gone! Ask me how I know.

Patrick actually the police didn't mind radar detectors. One example is an accident around a curve. They would aim radar at oncoming traffic to get them to slow down. I don't miss it in the truck. Actually I'm making more by running legal. I used to be an outlaw but no more.

Patrick, I think the important thing here is that it may be old, old tech, but it has not been bested by a clear margin ever since it went into production. That is very impressive. Use your car as another example: old technology that beats most of today's performance technological wonders:3DSMILE: That's on the philosophical side. On the practical side, the Valentine One has NEVER failed me. When/if it does, only then will I look around for an alternative...

valentine one, nice thing about this is you can send it in for updates. let me know if you ever figure out how to beat the laser.

I live in Ontario Canada were RD are illegal, I have a bell Sti driver with a added Bell Laser block. It has Never failed me and works great against blocking laser radar. It is also invisible so the cops can not detect it.

Valentine 1 can't detect Stalker Spectre Elite?

Not exactly true. Blockers scramble the laser signal and the sending unit knows it's being acted upon. Wire in a toggle so that once you quickly slow down and shut off your blocker the officer will then get a reading...at the correct speed limit. :D

Valentine One with Laser Jammers. If someone can teach us how to combat instant-on, then I'm all ears.

patrickt 12-04-2012 05:48 PM

No. The Spectre Elite is what DC and VA use to spot radar detectors. It'll catch a V1 from a half mile away and then pinpoint it on the fly. Very effective.

It's the other way around. The Stalker Spectre Elite is a radar dector dector. Used by law enforcement where radar dectors are illegal.

check out the Escort CI 9500, I have had one installed for 4 years and it has saved my butt a lot of times. Expenses, Yep, but no tickets

Truthfully, if you do not have a need for the "stealth" technology to hide from RDDs, and if your area does not use traffic control signals at stoplights that set your detector off, and if you do not get a lot of nuisance false alarms from motion detectors, then a ten year old detector is fine for you. They all detect K and Ka bands, and if you're used to it, then that's a big plus in using it effectively.
